Spring Oats, Barley, or Triticale

These crops can either be seeded in the spring or sown in August for fall pasture. Barley will be slightly higher in silage quality than other small grains, but all need to be harvested at a late boot stage. These are seeded at about 60-80 lbs/acre and require 75-100 lbs N fertilizer. If used as a spring companion crop with an alfalfa-grass seeding, both seeding rate and N fertilizer should be reduced to minimized the chances of lodging.
