Silo Type

Oxygen-limiting tower silos that unload from the bottom have high capital costs and make it very difficult to segregate different types of silage for different groups of animals. The silage produced is very high quality. Top unloading tower silos have lower capital costs, but higher dry matter losses than oxygen-limiting silos. Bunker silos have lower capital costs than tower silos, but silage quality is more operator-dependent. Correct packing and sealing of the top surface can result in high quality silage, poor packing and sealing can result in poor quality silage. Grass resists compression during packing more than other forages. Good packing won’t help if the grass crop is put up too wet.
