Grass Species

Cool-season perennial grasses provide a significant portion of the forage for dairy cows in the New York State [GIS-2]. Most of the perennial grasses used are not native to North America, but were introduced from Eurasia or North Africa several centuries ago. Timothy is well adapted to the Northeast environment and remains the most popular cool-season grass sown in NY, but other grasses such as reed canarygrass and tall fescue are increasing in popularity.
