Small Grains for Supplemental Forage

Small grains should be harvested at the flag leaf stage (mid-late boot stage) for lactating dairy cows [GIS-27]. Fiber digestibility declines quickly as the crop matures. Although overall forage quality moderates somewhat with grain formation, it is not enough to turn the crop back into a lactating dairy forage. Yield of these annual grasses, like any other grasses, is a function of available N. Small grains typically require 75 to 100 lbs N fertilizer to produce acceptable yields.
