Economic Evaluation of Feeding Trials

We used fixed and variable costs in association with grass feeding trials, to evaluate topics such as seed costs and corn prices [GIS-34]. Seed cost is not a concern when selecting perennial forage species and cultivars, and is generally not a concern for annual forage species, as long as reasonable yields are anticipated. As might be expected, the price of corn becomes increasingly important as the amount of corn fed increases. As the price of concentrate feeds increases, the comparative advantage of grass mixed with alfalfa increases.
